Sleep Apnea Surgery

Sleep apnea is sleep disorder. A person suffering from this disorder experiences frequent pauses while breathing when they are asleep. Apnea is Greek for ‘without breath’. Sleep apnea is of three types, mixed, central and obstructive. Obstructive is most common. This type is caused when the airway experiences anatomical blockage. UPPP or Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty is most common surgery for sleep apnea in adults. In this procedure the airway is enlarged by shortening or removing the uvula. The uvula is the tissue that is seen hanging from the roof of our mouths at back of throats. Adenoids and tonsils, if present, as well as soft palate or roof of mouth are removed too.

Sleep apnea surgery called Adenoidectomy or/and Tonsillectomy involves the removal of adenoids or/and tonsils. This is usually the treatment that is given to children because adenoids and tonsils that the enlarged usually cause sleep apnea in them. Tracheotomy involves creating hole in trachea or windpipe. This surgery has been approved by the FDA or the Food and Drug Administration in 1998. It involves shrinking the size of palate and/or tongue. Multiple medications might be required. It could also be used with the other treatments of sleep apnea.

The procedure of tongue suspension is a different procedure with regards to sleep apnea surgery. Its trade name is Repose. The FDA approved it in February 1998. This surgery involves keeping tongue from falling back on the airway. This is done by inserting tiny screw in lower jawbone. Stitches are also made below tongue. This procedure is usually performed in combination with the other procedures and it is also potentially reversible. However there are not many studies available with regards to success in the long-term. Not much clinical data has been published for demonstrating the effectiveness of the procedure.
